Key Features
- Wide Voltage Range: Supports DC 6–75V systems including 6V, 12V, 24V, 48V, and 60V — perfect for a broad range of vehicles and equipment.
- Real-Time Digital Voltage Display: LED screen shows live voltage readings instantly, so you always know exactly what you're working with.
- Color-Coded Polarity Indication: RED LED = Positive; GREEN LED = Negative — eliminating confusion during testing.
- Audible Alert: Built-in buzzer sounds when voltage is detected, letting you work without constantly looking at the display.
- Overvoltage Warning: Automatically warns you when voltage exceeds safe operating limits.
- Circuit Break, Short & Trace Detection: Quickly identify disconnected wires, shorts, and trace hidden circuits in your vehicle's wiring harness.
- Extended Spring Lead (~13.12 in): Generous-length spring-style alligator clip lead gives you plenty of reach in tight engine bays.
- Probe Protective Cover: Keeps the sharp probe tip safely shielded during storage and transport.
- CE & RoHS Certified: Meets international safety and environmental standards.
- No Batteries Required: Powered directly from the circuit under test — no battery installation needed.
How It Works
1. Self-Check
Before use, clamp the alligator clip to the positive terminal of a known battery and touch the probe to the negative terminal. The red LED will light up, the screen will display the battery voltage, and the buzzer will sound — confirming the tester is working correctly.
2. Polarity Test
Clamp the alligator clip to a known battery terminal (positive or negative), then probe an unknown wire. If the RED LED lights up with a voltage reading and buzzer sound, the wire is positive. If the GREEN LED lights up, the wire is negative.
3. Circuit Continuity & Break Test
With the alligator clip connected, probe along the wire path. If the tester lights up at point 1 but not at point 2, the wire between those two points is broken or disconnected — pinpointing the fault immediately.
4. Short Circuit Tracing
Clamp to a battery terminal and trace along the suspect wire. The LED and buzzer will indicate live voltage wherever the circuit is intact, helping you track down shorts quickly.
⚠️ Safety Warnings
- For use in DC 6–75V environments ONLY. Do NOT use with AC current or voltages above 75V.
- Sparks may occur at the probe tip. Do NOT use near combustible gases, dust, or flammable/explosive materials.
- Stop using immediately if the tester is damaged.
- The probe is sharp — handle with care during use and storage.
- Do not clean with chemical reagents such as alcohol.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What voltage systems is the Aermotor EM289 car circuit tester compatible with?
A: The EM289 is designed for DC 6–75V systems, making it compatible with standard 6V, 12V, 24V, 48V, and 60V vehicle electrical systems — covering most cars, motorcycles, trucks, and heavy equipment. It is NOT suitable for AC current or voltages exceeding 75V DC.
Q: Does the EM289 car test pen require batteries to operate?
A: No batteries are required. The EM289 car circuit tester is powered directly by the electrical circuit being tested, so you can use it right out of the box without any battery installation.
Q: How does the LED polarity indicator work on the EM289 test pen?
A: The EM289 uses color-coded LEDs to instantly identify polarity: a RED LED indicates a positive connection, while a GREEN LED indicates a negative connection. An audible buzzer also sounds when voltage is detected, providing both visual and audio confirmation during diagnosis.
Q: Can the Aermotor EM289 detect short circuits as well as open/broken circuits?
A: Yes. The EM289 is a multi-function diagnostic tool capable of detecting circuit breaks (open circuits), short circuits, and tracing wire paths. By clamping the alligator lead to a battery terminal and probing along wires, you can quickly identify exactly where a fault or short occurs in a vehicle's wiring harness.
