How to Braze Copper or Copper Alloy Pipes

1. Clean pipe surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt and oil.
2. Apply an even coat of flux to the entire area to be brazed — this prevents oxidation that can blacken metal and affect join quality.
3. Light the torch using an external ignition source.
4. Heat the pipe evenly, moving the flame over the entire area and holding the nozzle 4–7 cm from the surface. Allow approximately 30 seconds per mm of thickness until the area begins to redden.
5. When the pipe glows cherry red, place a brazing rod against the surface. Continue applying heat until the rod melts and coats the joint. Keep heating for a smooth, even join.
6. After brazing, allow the work to cool fully, then clean with wire wool or a brush to remove any oxide or remaining flux.
