How to Braze Copper or Copper Alloy Pipes
- Clean pipe surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt and oil.
- Apply an even coat of flux to the entire area to be brazed — this prevents oxidation that can blacken metal and affect join quality.
- Light the torch using an external ignition source.
- Heat the pipe evenly, moving the flame over the entire area and holding the nozzle 4–7 cm from the surface. Allow approximately 30 seconds per mm of thickness until the area begins to redden.
- When the pipe glows cherry red, place a brazing rod against the surface. Continue applying heat until the rod melts and coats the joint. Keep heating for a smooth, even join.
- After brazing, allow the work to cool fully, then clean with wire wool or a brush to remove any oxide or remaining flux.
Tips for Great Brazing Results
- Confirm the pipe material is copper or copper alloy and compatible with your brazing rod before starting.
- Splits or cracks larger than 0.1 mm can be very difficult to repair — inspect surfaces carefully first.
- Always clean the surface thoroughly before brazing for the strongest bond.
- Use enough flux to cover the entire work area.
- Wait until the area glows cherry red before applying the brazing rod for best results.
Phosphor Copper Brazing Rod Compatibility
This torch is compatible with standard phosphor copper brazing rods, suitable for general brazing on copper and copper alloy surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What fuel does the butane gas torch use?
A: This portable flame gun runs on standard butane gas, which is widely available at hardware stores and camping supply shops. Butane is NOT included with the torch — you will need to purchase it separately and fill the torch before use.
Q: Does the butane torch come with an igniter?
A: No, an ignition device is not included with this torch. You will need an external lighter or spark igniter to light the flame. This keeps the tool lightweight and simple to operate.
Q: Can I use this torch for BBQ and camping as well as brazing?
A: Absolutely! This versatile butane flame gun is designed for multiple applications including brazing copper pipes, soldering, welding tasks, outdoor BBQ fire-starting, and general camping use — making it a great all-round addition to your toolkit or camp kit.
Q: What is the optimal distance to hold the nozzle from the workpiece when brazing?
A: For best results when brazing, hold the nozzle approximately 4–7 cm away from the pipe or workpiece surface. Move the flame evenly over the entire area rather than holding it in one spot to ensure uniform heating.
